Explore the Science of Film

07/31/2009

Have you ever wondered how movies are made? Or how our eyes process the images we see in the theater? The MOST can teach you everything you want to know about movies and more.  Sessions are held at 11:00 a.m. – 12.:30 p.m. or 1:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. at the MOST, 500 South Franklin Street, Syracuse 13202. The Science of Moviemaking: Basic for Beginners will explore the science of film and educate participants about what the eye actually sees throughout a movie. Afterwards, learn all about how to use moviemaking software by editing pre-shot video clips and other basic video skills. After this session, home movies may never be the same again! We recommend our participants be ages 10 and up and those participating in the optional basic digital video editing have a fundamental knowledge of computing. This class is free with the regular museum admission. With the limited amount of space and only eight computer openings, please register by Thursday, July 30, 2009 with Kelly Gardner at kgardner@most.org or 425-9068  x 2141. For additional information or questions, please contact the education department at 425-9068 x 2148.

2009 is the International Year of Astronomy.  One of the celebrations is an art contest for students in New York State.  The MOST is participating with a three hour workshop about the planets and the night sky.  Participating students and an accompanying adult will be treated to a tour of the night sky in our planetarium.  They will also learn about the planets through hands on science fun.  The last hour of the workshop is for students to begin their art projects.  The MOST will provide application forms, art supplies and astronomy resources.  The contest extends to kindergarteners, but the MOST workshop is for students in the 3rd-6th grades.  Each student’s accompanying adult is encouraged to participate in any MOST activities, but not in the art portion.  Younger students can use the art supplies for free from 4pm-5pm.  participants are welcome to continue working until 5pm as well.

After you know how to make good photographs, it is time to use your skills to say something. This is the third course in the Natural Light series.  Students do not need to have taken any of the other courses, but should be comfortable with a camera.  In this three week course we are primarily concerned with creating a series of images that follow through on an idea.  Students will decide on a series and begin working on it.  Students will also work on a short personal statement about their work.  All students must have a camera and be willing to present their work digitally in class.

Bridges: Build 'Em and Bust 'Em Competition

11/21/2009

8:30am – 12:30pm

Free with admission

The MOST will once again host the Build’em and Bust’em Bridge Building Competition.  The annual event is coordinated by the MOST along with the L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science of Syracuse University and is sponsored by Lockheed Martin’s Syracuse-based business.  Build’em and Bust’em gives kids an opportunity to learn about engineering, teamwork and design.  These types of competitions bolster a student’s confidence in science and mathematics principles.  Teams of two or three students in grades 4-12 will be participating in one of three levels. Category 1 teams (grades 4-6) and Category 2 teams (grades 7-8) will design and build a bridge.  Category 3 teams (grades 9-12) will design and build a bridge and/or crane.  On the day of the event, faculty, staff and students from the L.C. College of Engineering and Computer Science along with engineering professionals will weigh and stress the structures to their breaking points, attempting to “bust’em” and winners will be chosen in each category.
