A Mark Twain Valentine: The Diaries of Adam & Eve

A special Valentine treat returns to the OHA! Share that special day with your special someone and funny presentation by America's foremost humorous and observer of the human condition, Samual Clemens, also known as Mark Twain. The celebrated author lived and wrote in nearby Elmira for a time. The waters in New York State became settings for two if his pieces, a tongue and cheek poem telling of a raging tempest on our own Erie Canal and Niagara Falls became the Garden of Eden in the Diaries of Adam and Eve. Clemens performed readings of his works locally as did many writers of the day.

Central New York artists are invited to this information forum to learn about the Everson’s 2010 artist series, The Edge of Art and the highly anticipated, multi-venue 2012 Biennial. Senior Curator, Debora Ryan and Education Curator, Pam McLaughlin will discuss the selection process and application guidelines. Topics will also include how to assemble application packets, site-specific project proposals, and electronic submission forms. 2010 Green Business Development Days

The green economy is moving fast. What are you doing to capitalize on it? Do you have a concept for a new green product or service, but need help refining your business plan? Could you benefit from some expert assistance by a professional business counselor? The Clean Tech Center, in conjunction with the US Small Business Administration (SBA) and the NYS Small Business Development Center (SBDC) is once again hosting monthly "Green Business Development Days" for entrepreneurs and small businesses. Entrepreneurs and business owners will be able to meet with a counselor from the SBDC to obtain advice about business planning, financing, access to federal contracts and other SBA programs. "Green Business Development" counseling sessions are 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month at the Tech Garden. Meetings are by appointment.

How Camera Work and How to Use Them

This three hour lecture/workshop is about understanding the manual features on 35mm film or digital cameras. The session begins by examining the scientific nature of light and the development of cameras through history. This background information creates a context in which to relate how the different parts of the camera work together. Students will learn about ISO/ASA, aperture, lenses, exposure, depth of field, and more. Students are expected to bring their own SLR or DSLR cameras to the workshop, so they can find each feature we discuss. Space is limited to ten participants and the classes are designed for adults. One of these exciting programs is the Natural Light Photography Series. The Natural Light Photography Series is taught by the museums staff photographer. Dustin Angell is a local artist and educator with a BFA in painting and photography. His work has been shown in California, NYC, and published in France and at home. Nate Pritts is the author of The Wonderful Yeare (Cooper Dillon, 2010), Sensational Spectacular (BlazeVOX, 2007) and Honorary Astronaut (Ghost Road Press, 2008.)  The founder and primary editor of H_NGM_N, Nate currently teaches at the DWC. Matt Hart is the author of two full length books of poetry, Who’s Who Vivid (Slope Editions, 2006) and You Are Mist (Moor Books, forthcoming), as well as numerous chapbooks.  A co-founder and the editor-in-chief of Forklift, Ohio: A Journal of Poetry, Cooking & Light Industrial Safety, Matt teaches at the Art Academy of Cincinnati.

Richard Russo Presented by the Rosamond Gifford Lecture Series

Richard Russo received his BA in English at the University of Arizona along with his Ph.D. in American Lit in 1980.  He also earned a master of fine arts degree in creative writing in 1981.  In addition to being a novelist he was a former fiction instructor and professor of creative writing.  He writes about blue collar life and “Main Street USA.”  He is the author of Empire Falls, Straight Man, and Nobody’s Fool.

The Salt City's own famed abolitionist, the Reverenced Samuel May hosts a dramatic presentation from Central New York Reads 2009-10 Book Choice March , by Geraldine Brooks. The novel follows the travels of Colonel March, the father of the March Sisters of Louisa May Alcott's, Little Women . Ms. Brooks presents a vivid depiction of the South prior to and during the Civil War through the lives of those he meets. It is appropriate that May introduces and adds insight in the presentation as not only is he fictionalized in the book but also in reality he was Alcott's Uncle. Join the OHA upstagers as they bring selected scenes to life.

The Clean Tech Center, in conjunction with the US Small Business Administration (SBA) and the NYS Small Business Development Center (SBDC) is once again hosting monthly "Green Business Development Days" for entrepreneurs and small businesses.  Entrepreneurs and business owners will be able to meet with a counselor from the SBDC to obtain advice about business planning, financing, access to federal contracts and other SBA programs.  "Green Business Development" counseling sessions are 9am until 4pm on the first Wednesday of each month at the Tech Garden.  Meetings are by appointment.

The Life & Work of Maxfield Parrish

An illustrated talk presented by Coy Ludwig.  Following Maxfield Parrish's death in 1966, his children selected and authorized Syracuse resident Coy Ludwig to write the first book about their father and his work,  The family gave Ludwig unlimited access to the artist's papers, archives and vast photographic library.  The resulting book, Maxfield Parrish, published in 1973, helped to create a resurgence of interest in the late artist's work. This program is co-sponsored by the Arts & Crafts Society of Central New York.

In the spirit of Ghost Walk, on the third Thursday of each month, after regular business hours, pay a visit to the Onondaga Historical Association for <!--[endif]-->Evening at the Museum. OHA has collected innumerable stories from Syracuse and Central New York for 150 years. Now you have the opportunity to explore our past in a fun and unique way. Accompany our knowledgeable night watchman to experience our exhibits in a new light and see who comes out of the woodwork to bring Salt City history to life.  The tour lasts for one hour, starting every half hour from 5-7pm.
