In celebration of Women’s History Month. In 1970s Iran, Marjane ‘Marji’ Statrapi watches events through her young eyes and her idealistic family of a long dream being fulfilled of the hated Shah’s defeat in the Iranian Revolution of 1979. However as Marji grows up, she witnesses first hand how the new Iran, now ruled by Islamic fundamentalists, has become a repressive tyranny on its own. With Marji dangerously refusing to remain silent at this injustice, her parents send her abroad to Vienna to study for a better life. However, this change proves an equally difficult trial with the young woman finding herself in a different culture loaded with abrasive characters and profound disappointments that deeply trouble her. Even when she returns home, Marji finds that both she and her homeland have changed too much, and the young woman and her loving family must decide where she truly belongs. 2007, 96 minutes.

In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, join gues filmmaker Zee Zarbock for a 'work in progress' screening of her documentary film, Madness in America, which explores the mad state of mental health in America. Through this project The Unfolding Story Pictures team is on a journey to bring issues surrounding mental illness into our daily conversations through education and destigmatization. The community is invited to view a 30+ minute segment of the movie, still a work in progress, as a means to spark a spirited discussion on these important issues.

In recognition of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender Pride Month. Mixing references to Indian mysticism and the epic poetry of Ramayana with late-20th-century feminism, Fire is a story of frustrated desires, love-starved women and the stifling bonds of tradition. The film depicts a middle-class family in today's New Delhi, where feminist ideas are plainly still a novelty. The central figures are two women who suffer different forms of marital unhappiness rooted in traditional attitudes. Sita and Radha are young Indian women whose husbands choose celibacy or mistresses over their wives. The two women become friends and grow closer together, forming a forbidden but liberating relationship. A lush, passionate story of emancipation and love in a closed society. Directed by Deepa Mehta, 1996, 1hr50min, PG-13.
