It’s interactive.  It’s a free night of entertainment!  Walk-Up Radio, hosted by Josh Grosvent, is a completely live comedy radio show taped in front of a live studio audience!  Broadcast through the web, this show is able to be heard all over the world.  The audience is invited to chime in at any time and be a part of the show.  Josh and his co-hosts discuss local and national events, pop culture and person stories.  The problem is they have very little control over what direction the show takes.  If someone wants to discuss something else, they can grab the red microphone and chime in.  If you’ve ever wanted to see a radio show happen right in front of your eyes, Walk-Up Radio is for you, begins at 8pm.

How Camera Work and How to Use Them

03/04/2010

6pm – 9pm

Admission

This three hour lecture/workshop is about understanding the manual features on 35mm film or digital cameras. The session begins by examining the scientific nature of light and the development of cameras through history. This background information creates a context in which to relate how the different parts of the camera work together. Students will learn about ISO/ASA, aperture, lenses, exposure, depth of field, and more. Students are expected to bring their own SLR or DSLR cameras to the workshop, so they can find each feature we discuss. Space is limited to ten participants and the classes are designed for adults. Reserve your space by contacting Admissions at 315-425-9068 x2132. As part of our educational mission, the MOST makes an effort to offer engaging classes for the community. One of these exciting programs is the Natural Light Photography Series. The Natural Light Photography Series is taught by the museums staff photographer. Dustin Angell is a local artist and educator with a BFA in painting and photography. His work has been shown in California, NYC, and published in France and at home. Dustin is also a science educator, working with families at the MOST and students in schools throughout the region. Take at a look at some of his spectacular work by visiting www.dustinangell.me.

In celebration of Women’s History Month. In 1970s Iran, Marjane ‘Marji’ Statrapi watches events through her young eyes and her idealistic family of a long dream being fulfilled of the hated Shah’s defeat in the Iranian Revolution of 1979. However as Marji grows up, she witnesses first hand how the new Iran, now ruled by Islamic fundamentalists, has become a repressive tyranny on its own. With Marji dangerously refusing to remain silent at this injustice, her parents send her abroad to Vienna to study for a better life. However, this change proves an equally difficult trial with the young woman finding herself in a different culture loaded with abrasive characters and profound disappointments that deeply trouble her. Even when she returns home, Marji finds that both she and her homeland have changed too much, and the young woman and her loving family must decide where she truly belongs. 2007, 96 minutes.

First Female Signatures in 162 Years

FIRST FEMALE SIGNATURES IN 162 YEARS

SYRACUSE MAYOR AND ONONDAGA COUNTY EXECUTIVE MAKE HISTORY

In the tradition of Women’s History Month, on March 9, at 1:00 PM, history will be made at the Onondaga Historical Association (OHA) when Mayor Stephanie Miner and County Executive Joanie Mahoney become the first women in 162 years to sign the Mayors’ Autograph Book.

The book, which is housed at the OHA, contains the signatures of every mayor from Harvey Baldwin, Syracuse’s first mayor who signed the book in 1848, to Matthew Driscoll, Syracuse’s 53rd mayor who signed in 2003. The book also contains the signatures of Onondaga County’s first, and only, two County Executives, John Mulroy and Nick Pirro.

Obviously, in the 162 year history of Syracuse mayors and the 48 year history of Onondaga County Executives, there has never been a woman in either position until Joanie Mahoney’s inauguration in 2008 and Stephanie Miner’s in 2010.  Consequently, there has never been a woman’s signature in the Mayors’ autograph book until March 9, when both signatures will make local history.

The brief ceremony is free and open to the public, though seating is limited, so reservations will be required.  Please call Karen at 428-1864, ext.312 to reserve your seat for this historic event.

Syracuse St. Patrick's Parade

03/13/2010

noon – none

Free

Events begin with a Mass at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception at Columbus Circle.

The parade steps off at noon from Clinton Square and runs south on Salina Street to the Onondaga Street area.

This year's theme is "Cead mile failte," meaning "One hundred thousand welcomes."

The parade, which is typically about three hours long, includes bands, floats and marching units representing hundreds of corporate, civic and community organizations.

Anyone watching or participating in the parade is encouraged to bring canned goods to donate to the St. Patrick Hunger Project Food Drive, which is held in conjunction with the parade. Barrels will be located along the parade route to collect donations.

Introduction of the 2010 Gael: This young woman has been a lifetime resident of the City of Syracuse - she went to St. Vincent's & St. Ann's grammar schools - she graduated Bishop Ludden and then went on to graduate from the Newhouse School at SU. She has worked for the City of Syracuse for 24 years. Her parents still live in the city, she has one brother & one sister, and three nephews - word has it she spoils them terribly! She has a great personality, Irish wit for sure, and has been so helpful to the parade, thatI am not sure it could run without her! She does more behind the scenes, on behalf of the City - all very quietly and just gets the job done. Her dad was a parade marshal for years - she may have been born into it. This woman really needs no introduction - special events coordinator for the City of Syracuse, Mary Beth Roach, is our 2010 gael of the year!!

Syracuse St. Patrick’s 2010 Parade Grand Marshal: This delightful gentleman was born in Old Town Maine. He was the 11th of 12 children - and two of his brothers became priests. He was an air traffic controller in England during the Korean War with the Air Force. After the Air Force he worked in a coffin factory - and for fun he coached a little league baseball team & went on to win the State Championship. Someone mentioned to him maybe he should coach for a living, so he went to Springfield College (which was known as the cradle of coaches) on the GI Bill & played football there. He received from Masters Degree from Illinois. After several coaching jobs, he arrived in Syracuse in 1981. He remained in Syracuse from 1981 to 1991 as head coach of the Syracuse Football Team. This year, he was voted into the College Football Hall of Fame, the first from Maine, and one of ONLY 184 coaches EVER. I am so proud and pleased to announce that our Grand Marshal for the 2010 Parade is none other that Coach Dick MacPherson.
